In this lively and insightful episode of EAT THIS with Lianne, we are treading potentially contentious waters and exploring the evolving conversation around alcohol abstinence. If you tuned into episode 30, you’re already acquainted with the physical impacts of alcohol on our bodies. However, the focus today shifts from mere information to contemplation and, perhaps, transformation.
With Canada’s dramatic adjustment in alcohol consumption guidelines earlier this year—recommending a mere two drinks a week, down from 15—the trend seems to be leaning towards abstinence. It poses an intriguing question: In a culture entwined with alcohol, is it possible to foster a new way of living, sans the spirits?
Alcohol: The Antinutrient
Nutritionally, alcohol acts as an antinutrient, offering no nutritional benefits and instead depleting vital vitamins from our system. The detrimental effects extend to our mitochondria, cognitive functions, neurotransmitters, and even our gut microbiota. And while reducing intake might seem like a middle ground, studies reveal that even moderate consumption can lead to degeneration.
A study from the University of Sussex threw light on some tangible benefits of going alcohol-free. Participants reported enhanced sleep quality, increased energy levels, weight loss, improved concentration, and better skin health. Significantly, a substantial percentage discovered that alcohol was not essential for enjoyment and identified triggers that tempted them to drink.
In this episode, I share my personal journey of grappling with alcohol’s adverse effects and the relentless pursuit of a middle ground that allowed me to indulge without consequences. What eventually steered me towards abstinence was witnessing someone’s behavior under the influence— a stark realization that led to a significant lifestyle shift.
The Why of Drinking: A Reflective Conversation
Reflecting on our drinking habits unveils deeper questions about our motivations. Is it the societal norm, the fear of isolation, or the pursuit of fun that keeps us tethered to this habit? Growing up around pubs in England, alcohol was a cultural cornerstone. Yet, could there be an alternative narrative—one that does not necessitate alcohol?
