As you’re here, I’m going to guess that you’ve had the experience of going into a supplement store, or health food store and you either have an idea of what you’re after, or you ask someone for help choosing a supplement for your symptoms. You get a recommendation out of the five to 10 options of one B complex, glucosamine, or turmeric because you’ve heard that it’s going to cure what ails you at the moment. Off you go home, you start taking your supplement, get it down somehow in the vain of all things healthy, and in a week or two, you don’t feel any different. But you keep trying anyway, because of the ad, the person recommended it or whatever reason that you persevere until you find another product that could work better, and that half-empty bottle makes it to the back of the already brimming supplement cupboard, drawer, or box to circle back to it one day. Then the cycle starts again. Off you go back, look for something else as that product didn’t do the trick. Could it be that there’s more to the situation that the supplement can’t quite reach? Yes of course. Could it be that that product isn’t a match for your symptom, or the dosage is off? Absolutely. I talk to people about the amount of magnesium that they take, not being enough all the time – they think that one 100mg capsule will help them sleep, but it needs to be triple that! But what if the product that you bought, invested in thinking that you’re investing in your health, just isn’t all that good quality-wise? With the growing industry of supplements being over $381.5 billion USD, there are going to be products with claims that they can help your diabetes, heart disease like fish oils is often top of mind, or the inflammation, mental health, hot flashes, period pains, PMS, headaches, aches, brain fog or that you’re getting sick all the time, that just isn’t the quality that can have the impact that you’re after. In episode 109 we dove into my supplement line as yes, I have my Take This by Lianne supplements that took years to put together, source, design and put out to market. But a trusted colleague recently brought up this topic, and he is more of an expert than I on this topic as his practice as a functional medicine expert reaches a global patient roster that includes referrals from the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic to name only a couple. Dr. Davis Brockenshire has graced this podcast more than any other guest, and I know that if he’s seeing a trend and has a topic to discuss, it’s in our best interest to be here to listen. He’s going to drive this episode and answer questions like what to look for, what are some basic essentials, and why do we even need supplements. So today on EAT THIS with Lianne the what, why, and how to find quality supplements for you and your family.
When Dr. B, if you’ve been here before you’ll know that’s what his patients call him, reaches out and says we need to do a deep deep dive into what, why, and how to find quality supplements, it’s worthy of booking the first available slot. He said that while supplementation is essential to stay on top of wellness today, the marketplace is riddled with danger and fake claims. What does that mean for you? Well, let’s not dangle the carrot any longer and welcome Dr. Brockenshire, functional medicine expert, back on EAT THIS with Lianne and get right to this extremely important conversation.
Something about supplements and how most people have tried something and never noticed and changed the type of thing.
A booming industry that has no report of slowing down. The raw materials that go into your supplement need to be of the best quality, and that may not be something that does have an impact I think what Dr B just shared sheds light on an industry that begs for more accountability. Companies with integrity may not be something that you think of, as price tends to what drives the buying choice, but again, knowing what he just shared can help us all further to part with our money with more confidence.

Hi Luanne,
Just listened to your supplements podcast. It boggled my brain! I take supplements daily but now am not sure if I need them all. Or if I need different ones. And most of them I buy at the drug store. Are you aware of a company called Naka? I use a couple of their products. My biggest issue is hot flashes. I’m 69 years old and have been dealing with them for 20+ years. Nothing I’ve tried has really helped. Anyway, love your podcasts. I came across you on the radio driving home one night about a year ago. I’ve listened to a number of your podcasts but still have many to go. Thanks for providing such great info. And I love it when Dr. B. is your guest.
Regards,
Bonnie Marks
Hi Bonnie, I finally found your comment! I recall reading it and thinking WOW, you’ve suffered with them for that long?! I’m so sorry.
I have found that a Physica Energetics product called DIM helped and a cream from The Girlfriend’s Doctor website (google it). Acupuncture is amazing as is liver support. There is no way that you should be suffering with them for such a long time. I’ll have an episode on this later in February. Stay tuned!
I just came across this YouTube video that could you, and some other tips too. Check it out. help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJZ8z_nTCZQ
