The BEST Burger Taste Test

The forecast looks amazing for Sunday, June 10 – the big day of our BEST Burger Taste Test. Jerry and I, along with and friends and family will be tasting 16 burgers – 8 plant-based and 8 meat-based.

If you’d like to follow along and try some out, here’s the list of what we will be tasting:

Veggie Burgers

  1. Yves Veggie Cuisine – The Good Veggie Burger
Linda says: By way of introduction, I have been total vegetarian 35+ years- and have always disliked most meat (couldn’t digest it easily anyway). It used to be a tough road and a constant conversation (justification) everywhere until the popularity of vegetarianism/veganism in the past few years. I took some to a BBQ where I was told that if I did not plan to eat meat, that I should bring my own. I took a 12 pack of these. The BBQist put 4 on the grill and they all went. By end of night, there were none left. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, sometimes just a change is nice.
  2. Dr. Praeger’s California Veggie Burger
Lesley says: Best VEGGIE Burger: Hands down, Dr. Praeger’s California Veggie Burger sold at Costco. Even my meat-eating husband loves them! Vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free! Taste great cooked in the oven but even better on the BBQ.
  3. Sol Cuisine Portobello Mushroom Burger
Donna says: This is our go-to burger that we serve for our vegetarian friend & our regular guests as well at our BBQs. 😉 It is especially good for people who enjoy mushrooms!
  4. Beyond Meat – The Beyond Burger available from YamChops
Maureen says: Without a doubt, the very best burger is The Beyond Burger! Looks like a meat burger, bleeds like a meat burger, smells and tastes delicious! This could convert dedicated carnivores… Let Jerry Agar try it! I’ve tried every veg burger out there, this is the winner.
Carm says: Today we tried Beyond Meat – The Beyond Burger and it was excellent – mouths were watering. It’s hands down the best veggie burger I’ve tried and I’m now questioning my loyalty to my favourite beef burger. Now, these burgers are a bit pricey at $10 for 2 but it’s worth every penny since I pay that for my butcher beef ones. Another bonus, they’re high in Protein. And… They even look like beef due to the beet juice which adds a bit of pink to the middle. So drop the ‘f’ from beef and a ‘t’ and you get a burger that can’t be beet (pun intended). I will be serving these up this cottage season to my family and guests – plan to trick a few. This burger will have Jerry eating his words, literally.
  5. PC Portobello Swiss Burger
Brad says: I am a loving meat eater! That being said, one of my favourite veggie burgers is the PC Portobello Swiss Burger. Hope you enjoy, Jerry and Lianne !!!
  6. Cardinal Roadhouse Brown Rice + Mozzarella Veggie Burger
Grey says: The Brown Rice and Mozzarella is my favourite veg burger, especially pan fried – the outside crisps up nicely.

Two which were unavailable in stores but submitted:

Amy’s California Burger (UNAVAILABLE)
Carey says: I’ve been vegetarian for 28 years and there’s nothing more unappealing than biting into a veggie burger that attempts to taste like and/or have the same texture as a meat burger. That’s why I like this burger. The texture, flavour and organic ingredients put this frozen veggie patty at the top of my list. Plus, it doesn’t fall apart on the grill like some others.

Kirkland Signature Gardenburger (UNAVAILABLE) – Catherine says: Have tried dozens and this one’s the best. Even my beef eating husband will eat them once in awhile.

Meat Burgers

  1. Denniger’s Fresh Portabello Blue Burger
John says: Hands down. I can’t make it better myself and I’m a decent cook. Angus Beef, about $4 each, but worth every penny. I made this burger for guests last weekend, they all agreed it’s the best – you must try it.
  2. Hayter’s Farm Onion & Parsley Turkey Burger
Tonett says: Try the Hayter’s Farm turkey burgers!
  3. Hayter’s Farm Spinach & Cranberry Turkey Burger
Bill says: We find these turkey burgers from Farm Boy have excellent taste and value.
  4. Farm Boy Thai Turkey Burger
Robin says: Farm Boy Thai Turkey or Caramelized Onion Swiss!
  5. Farm Boy Caramelized Onion Swiss Burger
  6. St. Jamestown Steak & Chops Grass-fed Beef Burger
  7. Cardinal Roadhouse Angus Burger
Greg says: Here is one of my favourites (I’m a little biased because I work for Cardinal). They were purchased at Longo’s and are pretty unique.
  8. Sanagan’s Meat Locker Fresh Burger
Kelly says: I love Sanagan’s Meat Locker in Kensington market. They make the best burgers hands down!

Fish Burgers

  1. Presidents Choice Blue Menu Wild Sockeye Salmon burger Eithne says: this is one of my favourite healthy burgers. There are 4 burgers for $10 when on sale. At 170 calories and low in fat they are a great way to add fish to your diet.
  2. Steak and Chops Salmon Burger with Veggies

Thank you all for the amazing recommendations and we can’t wait to try them out this weekend! Stay tuned for the winners!!
