Calling All Burgers! The BEST Burger Challenge

Before we start throwing just any ol’ burger on the barbie, Jerry Agar from NewsTalk 1010 and I want to find THE BEST burger to grace the grill this summer.

And, we need your help. Our goal, through taste and trial, is to find the BEST pre-made patties (both meat and plant-based) so that we (and you!) can take part in this challenge.

Since I’ve been on air with Jerry Agar – first on SunNews for a year or so and then on NewsTalk1010 – we’ve had an underlying burger ‘thing’. My first segment with Jerry was about a burger story in the news. After that, it seemed that we kept talking about fast food and burgers, so much so that I asked the producer if we could find another topic! At the time, I wouldn’t eat a beef patty burger because I didn’t like them and was of the opinion they weren’t healthy. He tried to sway me and even had a South Street Burger brought on LIVE TV for me to eat (which I refused to do). In retaliation, the following week on radio, I brought him a veggie burger. He didn’t like it at all!

As summer is fast approaching, I had a newsflash of an idea.

How about Jerry and I (along with some other colleagues) do a burger challenge?

Further to just a beef patty smackdown, what if together, we try and find the best meat patty and the best plant-based patty that withstands the barbecue and tastes great?! I do enjoy a burger now and then but I’m choosy about the burgers I eat. If it’s made from grass-fed beef, I’m in!

We need your help with suggestions of what you think is THE best pre-made patty, either meat or plant-based, to add to our list for our burger-off. Here are a few guidelines:

  1. The patties that we will taste test are for grilling at home on the barbecue. Not cooked and fully dressed take-out from a restaurant or burger joint. Ready-made patties from a supermarket, butcher or wherever else you get pre-made patties from. For this challenge, we aren’t looking for recipes.
  2. Share with us in the comments below which burger patty is your favourite, why you love it and why we should add it to our short list to taste test. Condiments will be the same on all burgers so that the taste of the patty shines through.
  3. Email us at info@liannephillipson.com and include the name and where it’s from. If you have the list of ingredients, nutrition breakdown and a photo of the packaging so much the better. If not, we will investigate!
  4. Jerry and I, along with some other colleagues, will do a taste test of ALL burgers. Think MasterChef style, giving each burger points in specific categories and reporting the winners on the Jerry Agar show on Friday, June 8th.

We will publish the list and our criteria, so you too can carry out a taste test yourself with friends and family.

This really is meant to be a whole bunch of fun and not meant to say that any one product is terrible, just finding which burgers will have those taste buds dancing like it’s Motown Friday!

, and make sure to enter for a chance to win two boxes of your chosen burger. May the best burger win!

    Hope they make the cut!

  2. I love Sanagan’s Meat Locker in Kensington market. They make the best burgers hands down!

  3. Lesley, what you have described is a vegetable patty.
A burger is made of beef (with some plant stuff for flavouring).
